The iFIRExMAN federated identity Asia-Pacific initiative is a major effort led by SIFULAN to advance secure access for research and education communities. Jointly proposed by SIFULAN Malaysian Access Federation, the Australian Access Federation, and several experts, the project was funded by Asi@Connect. Its primary aim is to strengthen federated identity technologies in Asia-Pacific, supporting innovation and regional collaboration.
From the beginning, SIFULAN led the development and deployment of federated identity solutions. These solutions allow users to enjoy seamless and secure access to academic e-resources through single sign-on. With one set of credentials, members can reach multiple services and resources. As a result, collaboration and resource sharing across institutions became easier, more efficient, and more secure.
Furthermore, SIFULAN invested in capacity building and software development. Training materials and tools are openly shared on GitHub. In addition, the federation promoted human networking among research and education communities. To ensure practical outcomes, SIFULAN tested the software in Bangladesh, Cambodia, and Laos. These pilots showed how the iFIRExMAN federated identity Asia-Pacific project expanded access beyond Malaysia. Consequently, the project encouraged regional cooperation, improved digital connectivity, and supported local technical growth.
Moreover, SIFULAN provided training and technical support to national research and education networks (NRENs). For instance, it assisted the Bangladesh Research and Education Network (BdREN) in expanding its federated identity infrastructure. By sharing expertise, SIFULAN strengthened the broader federation ecosystem in Bangladesh and created a sustainable base for future projects.
Therefore, the iFIRExMAN project demonstrated lasting impact. It advanced technology, built trust, and enabled stronger cross-border collaboration. Most importantly, it positioned SIFULAN as a regional leader in federated identity in Asia-Pacific.
